Language is a complex system of signs for communication. It comprises a number of structural, lexical and phonetic features. It is important to master these aspects of language for effective communication. However, there are some small linguistic items which can make one’s language natural, rich, and native-like. These linguistic elements are phrasal verbs, collocations, idioms or idiomatic expressions, proverbs, linkers, hedges, formulaic expressions, conversation starters, short responses, and question tags. These items are just as important in communication as knowledge of the basic vocabulary and structures. These units of linguistic system cannot be considered as separate from each other. They are all interrelated and work together to give effectiveness to language that we speak. A successful communicator requires some knowledge and understanding of these words and phrases in order to make his language rich. This paper tries to list out some important linguistic elements in successful communication in English and give some suggestions to teach and learn them. Keywords: structural, lexical and phonetic features, small linguistic items, idiomatic expressions, proverbs, linkers, hedges, formulaic expressions etc.
