The role of English language has undergone a change. English has not been viewed as a library language, a language for savants but it has to be taught for all and sundry for effective communication. English in India is taught as an ESL. Hence it has to be taught as a tool of communication as well as in relation to structures so that English becomes effective in writing too. Hence for elementary ELLS it has to be taught as procedural knowledge only to be consolidated as propositional knowledge in post Primary education and at tertiary level. Hence task based activities are to be implemented for doing role play and at the same time teachers are to be trained in this direction to make English class effective.
