International phonetic association was formed by Phoneticians such as Henry Sweet, Wilhelm Victor, and Paul Passy in 1886. This association caused Reform movement in Language Teaching also developed International Phonetic Alphabet. There was no focus on the research and study on pronunciation teaching in the West. Linguists and other grammarians spent time only in studying vocabulary and grammar. May be due to this reason pronunciation has been dub as Cinedrella(Kelly1969). Hence pronunciation has become a forgotten skill or unaware phenomena. Pronunciation is a complex area that refers to the use of correct stress, rhythm, and intonation of a word in a spoken language. Phonetics is the branch of Linguistics. Pronunciation and Phonetics have the same nature, but pronunciation has limited scope compared to the Phonetics. A word can be spoken in different ways by different non – native speakers. In English language there is no relation between spelling and pronunciation, e.g psychology and also English has many silent letters, just as calm, balm. North American Pronunciation; International Phonetic Alphabet ; Received Pronunciation, each has only one model of speech irrespective of geographical differences. In India the learners of English as second language has less exposure in English language. The teachers are trained in methods of teaching English but not in phonetics. The allotted to pronunciation in class room is very meager. Oral competencies of the trained teachers are not up to the mark. Under this backdrop my paper tries to discover the intricacies of pronunciation, role of teachers in role play, drama and other techniques. I have interview schedule to draw answers from teachers of class Ten (state syllabus).I have “spelling test and pronunciation test“ administered to the students of class Ten(state syllabus-) this is purely an descriptive research paper. Most of the teachers do not have a copy of dictionary either at home or school. No interest to get good at subject or what they are teaching Key-words: forgotten skill or unaware phenomena, stress, rhythm, intonation, north American pronunciation; international phonetic alphabet, received pronunciation, geographical differences etc.
