English, being a global language, occupies a prominent place in every sphere of our life. The methods of teaching English in India do not lay stress on functional knowledge, which students need to develop. For making communicative English effective there is a need to develop teachers' teaching competency skills. As opposed to the traditional approach in which passing the examination is the sole purpose, competency approach requires teachers in identifying real, rather than perceived needs. The English teacher's teaching competency skills can include communicative competency, discourse analysis skills, computer assisted language learning competency (CALL), the competency to teach language through literature and acquiring cultural knowledge. Key-words: Competence based teaching approach, gained experience, abilities, discourse analysis skills, communicative competency.
