Thomas Hardy is regarded as one of the remarkable regional novelists of Victorian age. Hardy, the Creator of Wessex novels has concentrated much on the relationship between human beings and nature, and men and women, character and environment. Eco-feminism explores the idea that all living beings should be seen in relation to their natural surroundings. It deals with a strong affinity between women and nature and the problem of oppression of women by men. Among his novels, Hardy has given much attention to nature and narration in The Mayor of Casterbridge subtitled ‘A Man of Character’ in which the protagonist, Michael Henchard sells his wife, Susan to the young sailor Newson in drunken and unconscious mood. The novel is infact endowed with deep ecological thoughts from the drastic experience Henchard has in his later stage, feeling guilty for the wrong done to a woman in his young age. But, however, at the end he was consoled by none but the lap of motherly nature. This paper attempts to generate a harmonious society with the necessary principles of ecology and feminism in order to protect nature on one hand and liberate women from the chains of male domination on the other hand.
