Chittara painting is the traditional painting of Deevaru community of Karnataka. The painting has all the characteristics of their tradition and it comprises highly complex geometric forms and is painted only by women in the community on important occasions. The paintings take the motifs from the local environment and contain several symbols which are around seventy in number that are allowed in paintings. They use materials that are available locally and made out of traditional ways only. As of now, the tradition has been on the verge of extinction and efforts at revival are in progress. This paper examines and brings out the salient features of the tradition and the socio cultural impact of modernization on the tradition.
