Anand published ‘Two Leaves and a Bud’ in 1937 in order to expose the brutal exploitation of Indian labours by the British managers of the tea estates in Assam. Though he was often charged with giving only a passionate and subjective analysis of the exploitation of labour, he may be condoned for taking sides with labour because he is mainly involved in highlighting the agonies of the unlucky and unfortunate lot.
