This research articles sets a conceptual framework within which the study is carried out. This is done by providing a historical background and surveying contemporary research and published work in the ELT area. At the outset a brief discussed English teaching Methods workout in India, is attempted to determine the status of ELT methods in our country. A review of Course books and Testing of spoken English leads to a discussion of the implication of these for the present study. Language teaching is an ancient discipline. However as Jadeja says, 'when we think of ELT. Certain well defined trends in methodological approaches to second language teaching can be discerned throughout this period. A study of these major changes in methodological approaches is done with a view to ascertaining the focus and status given to listening/speaking. The present paper deals with different methods with specific focus on the place of speaking and listening, besides presenting the general features of each approach/method.
