India with diverse cultures and traditions accept it as one of their languages. Though Hindi is considered as the National language, the status of English as a link language bridging gaps among the diversified culture and tradition is distinguished and it has emerged as the official language of administration academics, court, international trade and industry, media and the voice of the present world. The changing role of English, the liberalization of the economy, the opening up of the market and the increasing employment opportunities for English-knowing educated Indians have made the English language acceptable to a vast majority of Indians in contemporary India. It is even a library language and part of social life of educated and sophisticated sections of the society. In various parts of the nation, it is considered as first Language L1 and at various and major parts it holds the Second Language status. The growing demand of this language as window to the world of opportunities is evident from the growing number of English Medium schools and colleges in the urban, sub-urban regions of India. The study is informed by Second Language Acquisition theory and research, particularly the theoretical frameworks of Pragmatics and English as a lingua Franca to explore and theorize undergraduates’ perceptions of their language learning and pragmatic knowledge, their pragmatic competence as well as language strategies in learning pragmatics and English in general.of the nation, it is considered as first Language L1 and at various and major parts it holds the Second Language status.
