Fertilizers are substances that supply nutrient to plant or improve soil fertility. Modern fertilizer practices, introduced more than a century ago and based on the chemical concept of plant nutrition, have contributed widely to the immense increase in agricultural production and have resulted in better quality food and fodder. A steady increase in the quantum of consumption of fertilizer nutrients nitrogen (N), Phosphate (P) and potash (K) over the years is being noticed in India. The all-India per-hectare consumption of total nutrients was 89.8 kg in 2003 - 04, and consumption of total fertilizer nutrients in India recorded a spectacular increase of 42.3% during 2004-05. The consumption of total fertilizer nutrients in Tamil Nadu state recorded a good increase of 15.5% during 2005-06 over the previous year. Total nutrient consumption increased from 0.952 Mt during 2004-05 to 1.099 Mt during 2005-06. By taking consideration on these aspects, the present study focuses on quantity of different chemical fertilizer nutrient consumed by Ramanathapuram district farmers to their crops in Tamil Nadu. The present study inferred that the farmers in the study area use NPK at the ratio of 15.4: 8.5: 1. It was over and above the ideal level of ourcountry as a whole is 4: 2: 1. Keywords: Chemical fertilizer, NPKnutrient ratio, lifesaving watering, Karisal, soil, crop.
