The paper attempts to explain the hardships faced by Tess and optimism with which Tess used to handle her fate to evaluate whether she was a pure woman or not. The whole novel has been analyzed chapter wise to discuss the character of Tess as a pure woman. Although she was seduced by Alec Durbeyfield and she murdered him, she turns out to be a woman of character. Although she was born free, she never remained free from her family responsibilities. Her attachment to her family was her tragic flaw leading to her tragedy. She fought adverse circumstances bravely and tried to find out the solution for every situation. She was never seen as a human being. Everyone tried to use her. Alex sees her as a physical object, Angel idealizes her as a paragon of beauty, abandons her and finally accepts her but fate never accepts her. In the end Justice was done and the God of Immortals ended his support with Tess according to Thomas Hardy but she still remains a victim of fate. Definitely she was a pure woman.
