According to William Golding the ethical nature is not inherent in mankind. Indeed there is a certain capacity for evil that resides in man; his morality is simply superficial. It is the moral integrity that must prevail in order for him to be ethical and thus for a society to be maintained. In Lord of the Flies he takes a group of young boys and places them on a deserted island and asks what will the result be, a utopia or a dystopia? His answer is the latter. The reason is man himself. Living in isolation from society drives human beings into a savage state characterized by appalling acts, suggesting that being “civilized” is learned behaviour that masks mankind’s true nature. When the constraints of society no longer hold the human being in check, darkness in human is unleashed. Sigmund Freud identified it as the Id, the primitive force in the human psyche that demands the gratification of urges in human mind.
