The play ‘Silence! The Court is In Session’ is a play about how an unmarried young woman, Ms. Leela Benare, who is a victim of Indian male –dominated society suffers a lot& undergoes deep mental agony when she is betrayed by the other members of her group. The social norms and moral values are very stringent for only Ms. Leela Benare in the play. Adultery committed by men is not as offensive as it is by women. Tendulkar shows how an educated young working woman falls prey to the male hegemonic power. Benare’s maternal uncle nowhere appears as an accused for committing incest and ditching her. Though more sinful the society favours him as he is a male. Ms. Leela Benare is not allowed to live a happy and liberated life. She is the accused in the eyes of society and law for violating the social Taboo hence, she deserves merciless punishment. Prof. Damle who is socially responsible is not equally liable to have committed crime. This is well rooted in the sick psyche of Indian men and society. They place her in such a complex situation in which she is quite suppressed and any attempt by her for freedom is declined. Keywords: Male dominated society, manacle, Desires, suppress, orthodox people, rebellious, harassment, silence.
