This article views the extent of the formation and transformation of identity wrought by the cross culture in the life of an immigrant. Jyothi born to a poor Punjabi parents and married to Prakash, becomes Jasmine and after becoming a victim to violence and being socially marginalized she constantly dies and is reborn as different identities. Her different ‘avatars’ as Jyothi, Jasmine, Jassy, Jase and Jane show how she disunites herself from the roots and tradition of her culture and transgresses and crosses the border and assimilates and adapts herself to the American new life.his article views the extent of the formation and transformation of identity wrought by the cross culture in the life of an immigrant.
