Doris Lessing is a versatile writer. She was born in Persia and she settled in South Africa. She thus has sufficient experiences in witnessing the sufferings of the black people. It is exposed through her novels. Generally her works deal with racism, feminism and childhood development. Elizabeth Maslen comments: “Lessing’s writings always nudge from simply private towards public and the representative and wider historical, political and social implication are invariably part of the picture, especially since her characters are frequently framed as ‘representative’ ” (Iyer 13).
