This paper tries to map out the problems of teaching English in large classrooms with special reference to the UG students. Here I use case study method to acknowledge this problem not only from the teacher’s point of view but from the students’ point of view. I hope this will definitely help the language teachers to meet the solutions so that we, the language teachers guide them properly in the class. Generally, a large class prevents teachers from making eye- contact with all students. Moreover, a large class requires too much mental and physical effort to handle the class. For ESL class, to make the students interested to it, the teacher can use different exciting tools but one abandoned simply because ‘the horrendous task of setting it up with a large class.’ In this type of classrooms, teacher becomes a person maintaining only discipline rather than teaching anything to the student. English is our second Language, so it is difficult to teach English properly in a large class, as good eye contact, individual care, special motivation and practice – are very important in language classrooms. But large classrooms in India and especially in Assam, having more than two hundred students becomes itself is a great obstacle to the teacher. It is true that in a large classroom, we, the language teachers can do several experiments to attract the students to the teaching learning process, but at the same time it becomes a mere impossibility because of the large classrooms and the multi-level students who are sitting in it . So, as an academic exercise, this paper aims at covering the above discussion in detail and to find out some solutions and their implication in the classrooms of second language teaching so that the process of English teaching and learning becomes enjoyable, attractive and effective.
