The main ultimatum of this paper focuses on the unique qualities of Anandmoyi, an icon of Indian woman. Among the other women characters in the novel, Gora, the novelist, Tagore has painted Anandmoyi with special individualism to surpass the other major characters. Though the novel is profuse with number of themes, “Universal love of Anandmoyi” occupies an influential place in the novel. Tagore has not caged Anandmoyi with the feelings of mere narrow worldly pleasures instead he has rendered her with the wings of love to care and share with others. She is free from all the constraints like religion, sect and community which could do nothing to the universe. The only limitation to bind her is love. It is with her motherly love changes the narrow sectarian son, Gora into “the child of the Mother India.” Tagore has always opined of acclaiming a higher cadre for woman in each novel. Likewise he has assigned Anandmoyi with the significant task of spreading love on her fellow beings irrespective of their position and gender.
