In India women have always been exploited by the men and the society at large. With the growing Western education, things have begun to change. They are educated, economically independent and search for their identity. All these changing images of Indian women are portrayed in Desai’s The Inheritance of Loss. The novel explores feminine disparity in Indian society. Jemubhai spills wine on his wife’s face and Bomanbhai, earns money by human trafficking. The novel depicts the status of women of three generations. Sai, the third generation girl is rebellious. She scratches her boyfriend Gyan, for beating her up with a stick. Thus we can see the male chauvinism that has always tried to oppress the females but it is the postcolonial females who have recognized their status and are struggling to improve it.
