In That Long Silence, Shashi Deshpande presents a sensitive portrayal of womanhood without ever seeming to be defensive about it. The primary focus is on Deshpande’s women – their travails and privations, tensions and irritations, pains and anguishes. She portrays the condition of women as endemic, chiefly by drawing similarities among Jaya and variety of other female figures. The three generations of women belong to different classes except for the similarity that they are all trained to be passive listeners.
