In That Long Silence, Shashi Deshpande presents a sensitive portrayal of womanhood without ever seeming to be defensive about it. The primary focus is on Deshpande’s women – their travails and privations, tensions and irritations, pains and anguishes. She portrays the condition of women as endemic, chiefly by drawing similarities among Jaya and variety of other female figures. The three generations of women belong to different classes except for the similarity that they are all trained to be passive listeners. They practice non-violence and advocate that people should learn to negotiate disagreement and problems without fighting The paper titled “Subjugated Women in Shashi Deshpande’s That Long Silence” analyses the pathetic condition of Jaya and other women characters in patriarchal set-up.
