There are a lot of things in common between Vallathol Narayana Menon and Subramanya Bharati. Vallathol too was a great poet, Indian independence activist, social reformer and editor. Born on October 16, 1875, he began learning Sanskrit and Ayurveda at an early age. He had been a close associate of Nalappat Narayana Menon, another renowned poet. He had been the editor of Keralodayam and Atmaoshini. He met Gandhiji in 1924 and there after till his death, he followed Gandhian principles ardently. He was a known freedom fighter and an active member of Indian National Congress. His association with Tagore, Nehru, Sardar KM Panicker and several other luminaries helped him to be in tough with the latest trends in freedom struggle as well as literature. He had been the poet laureate of Kerala. China, Russia, Malaya, Singapore, England, France and Italy were the countries he visited. His poems were translated in to Russian and several other languages. Along with Malakkulam Mukunda Raja, he founded Kalamandalam and revived Kathakali dance of Kerala. His epics and a large number of poems live in the hearts of Malayalis. His translation of Valmiki Ramayana and Kalidasa's Shakunthala is being praised as they did justice to the original works.
