Kamala Markandaya is one of the most reputed novelists in the Indian literary scenario. She is aware of the socio, economic, cross culture problems of the Indians as she herself lives in abroad, England. It is true that the Indians living abroad struggle whether to adopt Indian culture or to embrace new foreign culture Her novels depict East-West confrontation. Cultural alienation leads a person to depression .When a person leaves his own country and culture and enters another old cultural values conflict with the new ones he faces in an alien nation. Expatriate writing is the thematic issue in the novelistic vision of the most of Indian novelists like. Anita Desai, Ruth Pravar Jhabvala, Kamala Markandaya and others. Most of the female characters of Kamala Markandaya are devoid of individuality. The remarkable feature of her female characters is the realistic portrayal of them in a comprehensive manner. Kamala Markandaya has deep knowledge of the South Indian villages, the condition of women in rural life, their sufferings and agonies. She portrays all the hardships of rural women in the traditional society.
