The paper highlights Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s social consciousness in her novel Get Ready for Battle, where she launches a war against injustice and corruption prevalent in contemporary India. The novelist dramatizes the class conflict by way of analyzing the gap between the haves and the have-nots. In fact, Jhabvala is considered to be a fine interpreter of contemporary India. She is also free from political alignments and extreme nationalism. Moreover, she is capable of making a detached comment on the reality of Indian social life. There is an air of authenticity about what she describes. She depicts an India in which the haves are getting richer and the poor poorer. The movement from an agrarian to an industrial economy has destabilized the whole social pattern. As far as her social conscience with regard to India is concerned, it is not overpowered by her sense of disenchantment with India in Get Ready for Battle.
