Indian novel in English is undoubtedly the product of the cultural and national awakening which had its origin in the Bengal Renaissance of 19th century. The rise of the Indo-Anglian novel is closely connected with the socio-political development in India in the thirties. The Indo-Anglian novel has shown the capacity to accommodate a wide range of concerns. Bhattacharya gives the reader valuable insight into the pathos of economic impoverishment, mal-distribution of wealth and human degradation caused by political upheavals.
