This paper is focusing on re-reading the novel Arumugam by going beyond certain textually allocated passages. This paper aims to relocate the text in the broader national arena from the regional demarcation. It is attempting to remove or transgress the caste label attached with this text. This paper is using the novelist’s caste background to foreground the richness of the regionality which has been shadowed by using the same caste label. It is also focusing on re-defining Dalit Literature with modern explanation. The paper is highlighting certain important issues such as labour exploitation, prostitution and forced urbanization by offering a broader pan-Indian perspective to those social issues. The paper is aiming to suggest various approaches to read a regional text to understand the beauty of the rustic or foke work of art.
