Social inequality and gender discrimination is a global phenomenon. When we look into the history of human civilisation, we find a struggle between oppressor and oppressed groups. In America, African Americans were enslaved and discriminated by white Americans due to their colour whereas African American women were discriminated and oppressed due to their colour and also gender. The present paper focus on racial and gender discrimination of African Americans in America represented by Maya Angelou in her very famous book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Keywords: colour and gender, racial and gender, inequality and gender discrimination, global phenomenon etc.
