Gently Falls the Bakula” is the story which talks about Shrikant’s career and Shrimati’s marriage life. Basically Shrikant and Shrimati are couple. For them, marriage should be their prime concern but it is not so for Shrikant. Since career is chosen by him, Shrikant completely focuses on the profession and fails to satisfy even the basic needs of his beloved wife. After the marriage, Shrikant’s concentration is fully contributed to his career which makes him a career-oriented person. Also he is unable to pay the least attention to the commitment which he has taken up heartily. The fame and position makes him to forget what is primary and what is secondary. The researcher’s intention to work with this novel is to highlight that the marital life plays a significant role when compared to the career-oriented life. Reaching the pinnacle of one’s field alone doesn’t give fulfillment to life but holding the family and profession as two eyes would definitely afford the fullest satisfaction at the end. This fact is not understood by Shrikant which led him to lose Shrimati from his life. Through this research, the researcher aims to distinguish between fame and commitment. The researcher explains when the commitment is done with dedication, thinking that this is the prime of all, fame is accomplished naturally. When it is not done so, though the best is given it results in failure. Thus, the psychology of Shrimati is not analyzed properly by Shrikant. When the novel is read, the researcher understands well that life does not demand luxury rather it longs for the love, affection and care. In this novel, Shrikant fails to shower the three that is mentioned above. The researcher also has discovered that adjustments cannot be tolerated for a long period of time whereas accepting the behavior and character of a person would help a partner to lead a comfortable life throughout. Love is nourished only when the couple gives and takes. If not, it is perished. This is what has happened in the life of Shrikant and Shrimati. The holy marriage is shattered easily because of the fame and position. Therefore, Sudha Murthy through Shrikant has thrown light on the modern values and work ethics of the current society nearly three and a half decades ago.ently Falls the Bakula” is the story which talks about Shrikant’s career and Shrimati’s marriage life.
