World today has a set of norms to which the people generally adhere. The problem ascends when one cannot ensue with the designed roles as they are haunted by their desired independence. Loneliness is not something unique, but is, in fact, a characteristic of the society. This paper is based on Anita Desai and Margaret Laurence, how they have handled the gender issues in their works, “cry the peacock” and “The Stone Angel”. Maya of is a hypersensitive and a submissive, married to a busy, practical lawyer Gautam which in turn makes her a murderers, Whereas Hagar is highly ambitious who takes decisions by herself. Both the women are not understood by the people around them which cause a disturbed situation. Both Maya and Hagar lack companionship, a person to share the inner feelings, not because they are wrong but because of the gender inequality that prevails in the society.
