The longest journey of Mulk Raj Anand has travelled far to understand human values, to have a feel of his own suffering as well as the suffering of the „wretched beyond wretchedness‟ through his struggles and protests, doubts and fears, through his education and philosophy, through literary influences and beliefs, through his love of man or his tenderness towards the last numbers of our society and through his innermost urge to transform all he felt into a mould of art. Anand‟s literary shape of novels is a fusion between the western realist traditions of the novel with the Indian tradition of the moral fable. And the synthesized literary form which emerges out of his tension is his own invention which he calls „Indian Expressionism”. This analysis will prove that events and experiences of Anand‟s life have positively shaped his literary bent of mind, emerging as a committed novelist.
