Once the colonized natives, in the twentieth century attained its independence. It led its freedom declaring the colonial impressions in writing. First the colonized countries came under the commonwealth writings, then “The emergence of ‘New Literatures in English’ is a postcolonial phenomenon and a creative reaction against the exploitation and manipulative implication of political ideology in literature. The force of such politics when it came to action inevitably resulted in reaction. Thus, New Literatures as a collective body are a reaction against the politics of power, of ‘Othering’, and of inclusion and exclusion in high literature.” (Kumar, xv) This paper is proposed to study African history and a historical novel Things Fall Apart. The history of Africa can be studied before the European entry into Africa and then. This historical novel published in 1958. The selected novel “… is a perfect representation of Nigerian heritage: the tradition, culture and history of Igbo people” (Kumar, 53). One can see the “colonialist mentality.” (Innes, 37) Keywords: Africa, Igbo, Chinua Achebe, Berlin conference, Colonization, Diaspora etc.
