The following review papers aims to examine and evaluate a plethora of sources inclusive of the original literary texts as well as their critiques in order to draw a sharp distinction as well as understand in a rudimentary fashion the overlapping tenets of the two major characters in the seminal piece of fiction, The Vendor of Sweets. The major axiom of differentiation between the two characters is the polar yet juxtaposed themes of tradition and modernity. The aforementioned character sketches are then briefly compared with that of Raju’s character in the iconic novel, The Guide. The review paper then concludes by taking into consideration numerous remarks that summarize the aspects of R.K. Narayan’s work’s critical appreciation.
