Invisible Man was the first and an award winning novel by Ralph Waldo Ellison. The novel is a classic of American literature, considered a masterpiece of modern literature and has been translated into 14 languages around the world. Invisible Man is the story of an alienated and isolated black man living in racially repressive urban America. This paper is an attempt to portray the varied elements- betrayal, blindness, and invisibility through some of the characters depicted by Ellison in the novel that explores the nameless protagonist’s quest in struggling to search for his identity. Finally, he remains bewildered regarding his own identity but determined to honor his individual complexity and his obligations to society as an individual.
