Amitav Ghosh has chosen journey across borders of nation states for this novel, Sea Of Poppies which is one of the masterpieces of Ghosh. The paper focuses on how characters from different language, different background, culture and tradition come together to experience the journey of their lives .The vessel (IBIS) becomes a “new home” for migrants. Migration runs through various incidences in the core of novel. Multiculturalism frees the characters from cultural and political repression. In the process of the journey to an unknown land the characters undergo rites of passage in order to form a new society for the migrants. The image of the ship as shelter giver to the dispossessed in spite of the barriers they come across is highlighted by Ghosh. By portraying the intersections between culture, tradition, politics, imperialism, various languages and suppression of people.
