Katherine Anne Porter is a prolific short story writer of the twentieth century who has created literary history through her innovative use of psychological themes. She is widely recognized for her in-depth analysis of problems posed by human relationships. She transcends above the common and narrow conventions of marriage to explore the nature of the role of husband and wife, disseminating their inner thoughts, emotions and their disillusionment in relationships. The article stresses on the importance of marital relationship concentrating on the short stories Rope and A Day’s Work in relation to the repressed emotions causing conflicts. In these two short stories, we can trace the relationships in marriage and examines how and why emotions are repressed, whether it is in order to contain conflicts or repress conflicts in order to contain emotions and whether it works.
