The paper endeavors to study the novel The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald in the context of the America of the early twentieth century. The novel was set in the second decade of the twentieth century. It was an important decade for the Americans as they were witnessing important political and social changes. The Americans had finally extended the right of vote to women and they enjoyed the new found freedom. This generation of young women was referred as the “flappers”. Many of Fitzgerald’s works deals with the flappers as he was said to a chronicler of his age. This paper is an attempt to study the female characters of The Great Gatsby: Daisy, Jordan and Myrtle. It also tries to analyse as to how the writer has depicted the female characters in the light of the “flappers” and the jazz age. Keywords: flapper, female, Daisy, symbolism
