English is not at all a foreign language for the Indians. It has become an indispensable tool for us to climb up the ladder of success. In the changed context of globalization, the value of English as a treasure trove of opportunities has grown manifold. Even the people who were prejudiced against the language have realized its importance in the Global market. English as a second language has been taught in schools and colleges. However, the students at College level lack in communication skills which play a pivotal role in their career making. There are many factors for the poor show of the students. The major problem the students face is inconducive environment for learning English and lack of proper motivation. The students who get promoted to UG level have been haunted by an unreasonable fear of English. This has been further aggravated by the teachers who are unwilling to adopt modern techniques in ELT. Generally, there has been a widespread apathy among the teachers to teach pronunciation in a regular classroom. Some feel that one can acquire language skills without proper pronunciation. In fact, pronunciation is very essential to speak a language fluently. In the light of the above understanding, the present paper discusses the problems encountered by the students in acquiring the language skills and suggests possible remedies for the improvement of the situation.
