Sudha Murthy, a Padma shree Awardee is one of the prolific Indian writers in English today. She is a humanitarian, columnist, novelist, non fiction writer and a passionate teacher. Women and Women’s issues are addressed in her novels. They are based on truth and are presented marvelously. The present paper is a sincere effort to throw light on the emancipation of women through the characters of Sudha Murthy’s novel ‘Gently Falls the Bakula’. The researcher highlights how the self centered notion of the protagonist’s better half takes a toll on the once self-interested and ambitious woman. The novel is a criticism of the male dominated society where a woman realizes and gets empowered after many struggles.
