The paper discusses the epoch making work, “Structure, Sign and Play in the Discourse of Human Sciences” of French philosopher and critic, Jacques Derrida. An attempt is made to analyze and understand Derrida’s interpretations of how the concepts of ‘Structure’, ‘Sign’ and ‘Play’ are perceived by the different human sciences. Further an attempt is made to elaborate the questions raised by Derrida against the prevailing notions of structure and how a structure dismantles and undermines itself. A critical analysis of Derrida’s work discusses how these very established critical dogmas and conventions inherently contradict themselves. The deconstructive critic’s primary job is under question. The role of identity in a structure is also examined. Finally, an attempt is made to understand the complex interplays of ‘Construction’ or ‘Structure’ and ‘Deconstruction’ as perceived by Derrida which marked an impression on the Post-structuralist theory as well.
