Literature and fine arts have always coexisted. The interconnectivity between these two art forms has resulted in the mutual illumination of both. Different novelists have exploited the convergence of literature and fine arts, in their books. Dance has been used to illustrate characterisation, development of plot, implication of imagery and as a catalyst for sexual euphemism by many authors. Reputed English novelist R.K.Narayan, who is known for his simple diction, has written about a dancer protagonist in his book, The Guide. Kothamangalam Subbu, who is a poet, lyricist, an author and a film director, has penned Pandanallur Bama, in Tamil, in which the protagonist is a dancer. Two novels, one in English and one in Tamil have been taken for this study, which exemplifies dance as a creative art, in the evolution of the character of the protagonist. The positive effect of the art in the lives of the protagonists as they manoeuvre through the adversities in their life, is analysed. Keywords: Interconnectivity, coexisted, mutual illumination, characterisation, sexual euphemism, catalyst, implication of imagery, creative art.
