This paper renders to explore how Jaishree Misra’s Ancient Promises positions the protagonist Janu to break the fetters and emerge as a new empowered woman. Jaishree Misra skillfully portrays how an Indian woman asserts her duty as a daughter, a wife and a mother that she had inherited from tradition. Janu’s unflinching love towards her parents makes her bid adieu to her childhood sweetheart and gets married to a traditional Maraar family in Kerala. Janu remains passive to all the troubles that she had to face because of her in-laws in the family. Education paves for her empowerment. She arrives at the decision to get a degree through distance education. She gathers courage and finally chooses to break the cardinal rule of marriage. She goes in search of new pastures. The paper analyses how in this novel misfortunes chase Janu as a shadow one after another and the way in which she with her sheer will power moves out of the tangle. She envisions a new life and moves towards a new awakening. She walks out with new hope breaking all the fetters created by patriarchal society.
