The Oxford English Dictionary is in a constant state of evolution and development, not only as contemporary English changes but also through the discovery of new historical facts about the words of the language. This paper offers a brief demonstration of some antedatings of words, uncovered through occasional Internet searches. The findings show that the dates given in the OED of the first occurrences of several items can be put back many years – even, in one case, a century. Now that so many rare early texts have been digitised and made available electronically, intriguing lexicographical investigations are at everyone’s fingertips.
