Feminism deconstructs the accepted norms of a patriarchal society. Jaishree Misra’s autobiographical novel Ancient Promises narrates the journey of self-discovery of a woman who refuses to remain incarcerated within patriarchy. As a girl, Janaki has internalised the patriarchal notions of her society, and fails to identify her rights. As a mother of a mentally retarded child, Janaki realises her vocation. Sexism involves within the institution of family and marriage under patriarchy is revealed through the novel . Disability is another theme that the novel tackles with, and Janaki bravely fights against the stigma on disability prevailing in the society and saves her child from an adverse atmosphere. Jaishree Misra in the novel tries to promulgate gender equality by criticising sexism involves in the institution of family and marriage, but hardly promotes gender hostility.
