Kalidas, known as the Shakespeare of India, is one of those Sanskrit literary personage, who has left a world of Indian art and culture in his writings. Before having a discussion on the text, let us first evaluate the term ‘culture’. ‘Culture’ according to oxford dictionary means ‘the art and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.” Indian concept the culture is far more magnificent and comprehensive. In Indian culture stood for the cultivation of life in all its infinite variety and totality. It measured the heights, depths and the vast expenses of life, encompassing earth and heaven. It was the whole man that Indian culture in ancient times, had in view, not merely economic, hedonistic, social or spiritual man. Indian culture seems to be a strong amalgam of sex and spirituality. The present paper is focused on Kalidasa’s Abhijnāna śākuntalam.
