Shashi Deshpande's The Dark Holds No Terrors depicts a woman searching for self identity in her family and the society. Shashi’s women characters are really empowered women or if they are just wearing a mask of tranquility. Shashi Deshpande's novels are concerned with a female psyche and an understanding of the mysteries of life and the protagonist's place in it. She uses irony in the majority of her stories and a novel to satirise the morals and manners of our society. Her language is simple, direct and terse, close to the speaking voice. Sometimes, instead of full and long sentences she uses words very meaningfully and powerful. Shashi Deshpande believes that a writer gives to society a mirror image of itself. So she tried to do in her creative writing. It is not that she has deliberately made women the focus in all her novels. In fact she wanted to portray the whole society in her writings. Deshpande believes that everybody should live within the relationships. Keywords: Male Chauvinism, Identity Crisis and Gender discrimination
