Inculcating moral ideas in children has been a cause for their upbringing in the right manner during the Puritan times. Hawthorne brought forth a dimension of education through his short stories with certain trivial issues. The edification of morals in literature during the times had an aim towards internalization of societal values. American writers had challenges in giving morals to the next generation as the society had certain fundamentals which were existing in Puritan America. The free-will of Hawthorne to take the challenge to the ideologies of the days through literature, even, when he tried to have them as text books. He also brings a different understanding with relationships in the Puritan Society.
