In view of the recent Supreme court verdict considering them as ‘third gender’ of the bonafied citizens of India, accorded them ‘the backward class reservation in education and employment’ and treated them on par with man and woman in the hegemony of power structure, their political right to contest election much earlier notwithstanding, it seems pretty clear that the question of “Can the Subaltern Speak” has been adequately answered. With political freedom they have become successful to represent the mainstream politics cutting across gender politics. Shabnam Masi, a transgender (hijra) who had been elected to represent the Madhya Pradesh State assembly defeating both BJP and Congress rivals with huge margin of votes is a case in point. The trend set by Sabnam Masi seems to have been culminated in the wake of recent supreme court verdict which let loose their much sought after economic and social sanction.
