Cynthia Ozick is a Jewishynthia Ozick is a JewishAmerican short story writer, anovelist, and essayist whosecentral concerns have been thedepiction of the lives of JewishAmericans. Her choice ofserious subject matter, particularly the Holocaustand its impact on Jewish American life is coloredwith a playful prose which has little bits ofamusement steeped in misery of its own. Hercandid use of sentences and words to describesavage situations sometimes leaves the reader bothstunned and wondering. Much of her work revolvesaround the dire implications of the Holocaust andits aftermath. For Ozick, the career of writingbecame a medium of working through the traumaof humiliation and discrimination of her schoolyears and of the American society in general. Thispaper attempts to analyse her treatment of theHolocaust through her short fiction as also hernarration of the contemporary conditions of theJewish Americans.Keywords: aftermath, contemporary,depiction, Holocaust, Jewish, trauma.
